SALMON FISHING IN RIVERS:
First with the government's attempts to introduce salmon into the rivers of southern Chile, and subsequently with the rapid development of salmon farming in the channels and fjords of the coast, and due to several causes and fortuitous accidents that have caused major escapes, the colossal salmon have become increasingly abundant in our waters. They have also began to reproduce in their newfound wilderness, and each year the mature specimens gather in the bars of the rivers flowing into the sea, to start together their upriver spawning migration, a phenomenon that occurs mainly during the months of March, April and May, with some species coming in earlier, being the most common the Chinook salmon.
FISHING IN LAKES:
If you are one of those fishermen that like fishing in lakes, Aysén is the ideal zone. More than 125 lakes over 500 hectares acres, plus hundreds of lagoons are waiting for you. Fishing from a boat, tube or from shore is very good. I can recommend fishing in our lakes throughout all the season (October to March), yet it is better early in the season, when the waters are low and the hungry fish eat everything they are offered. Good results can be obtained using medium sink-tip lines, about 130 grs., not heavier because the waters in this region are very cold in the depths and fish prefer shallow zones close to the shore. The use of black or dark olive streamers, with flashy tails, will give you a lot of satisfaction, and in some lakes dry fly fishing (with caddis and mayflies) is excellent. Visit my photo gallery for pictures showing some of these lakes.
FISHING IN RIVERS:
Just as there are many lakes in this region, we have a similar number of rivers; many of them originate from the lakes and others are formed in the summits of high mountains. All of them are filled with wild trout waiting to be caught, very strong and always ready for a good fight. These rivers are swift and run through meandering valleys towards the sea, forming white water riffles, backwaters and pools where the biggest trout seek food and protection. One cannot generalize about how to fish the rivers of Aysén, each has its own degree of ease and difficulty, and pose a permanent challenge for the fly fisherman as their conditions vary along the season depending on the temperatures and the snow meltings. Many are ideal for dry fly fishing, and I invite you to explore some pictures of them, together with a brief description, in my photo gallery.
